Most Scenic Driving Routes in Eire

Ireland is full of amazing scenery and one of the best ways to explore Ireland is by car. Because our island is so compact, it usually doesn’t take more than 4 hours to get from one place to another. There’s a reason Ireland is such a popular tourist destination, but a lot of us Irish leave it unexplored. It is definitely worth loading up the car, gathering a few friends and getting on those windy, Irish roads.

Galway to Westport

The trip from Galway to Westport goes from Galway city through the wilds of Connemara to the Mayo coastal town of Westport. Drive along the N59 and head over to Clifden. The Sky Road in Clifden is a must for fantastic views of the Atlantic coastline. On your way to Westport, stop at the Connemara National Park. The outdoor paradise is the ideal place for a day trip with so much to see, such as the famous Kylemore Abbey and its spectacular walled gardens. Go hiking on the Diamond Loop, a gentle sloping walk through the bogs and past fenced fields with herds of sheep and horses. On a clear day, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the sea. After your visit to Connemara National Park, continue north and enjoy the view of Killary Harbour and try a delicious dessert in the Blackberry Cafe. Finally, arrive in Westport and visit Westport House, go horse riding on the beautiful beach or, if you have the energy, hike Ireland’s ancient pilgrimage site, Croagh Patrick.

Glengesh Pass to Cliffs of Moher

Glengesh Pass to the Cliffs of Moher is about 302km long and offers incredible sights both at the beginning and end of this drive. Start your trip off in Donegal and follow the Wild Atlantic Way along the narrow winding roads through the remote mountain bog land of the valley of Glengesh Pass, which was formed by immense glacial forces thousands of years ago.

Stop at one of the several viewpoints to take in the whole extraordinary scenery. Drive through Sligo and Galway and visit Father Ted’s house for a cup of tea and some delicious homemade organic baking. Make sure to take home a jar of yummy homemade jam home with you. The destination of your trip will be the majestic Cliffs of Moher. O’Brien’s Tower at the headland at the Cliffs of Moher offers stunning views north towards Doolin and south towards Hags Head. It was built in 1835, by the descendant of Ireland’s first High King.

Mourne Coastal Route

The Mourne Coastal is about 140 km long and combines two of Northern Ireland’s most scenic drives; the Ring of Gullion and the Mourne Coastal Route. The Mourne Mountains were once the inspiration of C.S Lewis’ Narnia series. The drive will take you through the heart of the mountains and its stunning scenery. Visit Slieve Gullion Forest Park to take a breath from everyday life and enjoy the fantastic views of the volcanic landscape. Visit the small villages of Annalong, Dundrum, Ardglass and Tyrella before finishing your trip in Castle Ward overlooking Strangford Lough, a favourite with Game of Thrones fans, where it doubles as the home of the Stark’s, Winterfell.

Ring of Kerry

One of the most adventurous road trips you can go on In Ireland is The Ring of Kerry. There are many starting points for the Ring of Kerry, and it can realistically be completed within the day. However, if you have more time – we advise you extend your stay at each of the stop off points. Kickstart your trip with an artesian coffee in the beautiful town of Killorglin before you stop off and enjoy the outstanding scenery offered by Carragh Lake. Providing the weather is good, take a trip to the stunning scenery of Rossbeigh Beach. From here, you should be able to see the Dingle peninsula. If swimming’s your thing, you will be pleased to find it has a Blue Flag. Immerse yourself in Ireland’s ancient culture by visiting Ballycarbery Castle. The site has no tour guides, meaning the visit will be a truly authentic experience. Travel up the windy, narrow old country roads until you reach Geokaun Mountain, this is a spectacular highlight. The view of the lakes and isles is truly astonishing. Finish your journey by stopping in the quaint town of Sleem, here you can enjoy a delectable meal at one of their famous restaurants, or pick up some souvenirs to remember your trip by.

The Garden County

They don’t call Wicklow the Garden County for no reason. Wicklow has so many scenic routes; it deserves a blog of its own. The Wicklow Mountains offer an enchanting driving experience that can’t be missed. Start your drive by turning onto the N11, just passed Bray you make a turn for Kilmacanogue. Continue to Roundwood through the Calary Bog and past the majestic Sugar Loaf Mountain. You must take a trip down to see the legendary Glendalough. Glendalough is one of the most historic landmarks in Ireland; enjoy the miraculous ancient buildings by going on a guided tour. Head over to the Glencree Centre for reconciliation for a tranquil experience. Finish your trip by doing a village tour of Enniskerry. Then, simply slip back onto the N11 and make your way back to Dublin.
