Rodney S. Carlson, 86, of 44 Briarwood Circle, died Sunday, November 19, 2023, in UMass Memorial Medical Middle from issues following cardiac surgical procedure.
He was born in Worcester, son of Sven H. and Evelyn Rose (Mercier) Carlson, and lived there most of his life.
He leaves his long-term accomplice, Suzanne (Schmidter) Stanley; his first spouse, Dorothy (Swyden) Carlson; three kids from his first marriage and their kids, James Carlson of Fl, Robert Carlson of Cork, Eire, and Catherine Fluehmann of FL; and three kids and two grandchildren from his partnership with Suzanne, Catherine Blackwell of Warren, MA, Barbara Petrocelli of Douglas, MA, Gregory Stanley of Malden, MA, and the grandchildren, Heath Blackwell of Ayer, MA and Elizabeth Petrocelli of Boston, MA. He’s preceded in demise by his son Richard R. Carlson.
He graduated from Worcester Academy in 1955 and attended Clark College. He based Ensured Industrial Providers and ran it for greater than twenty years. Later in his profession, he grew to become a licensed monetary planner and life insurance coverage dealer.
In 1993, he and his accomplice, Suzanne Stanley, grew to become full-time, live-aboard sailors on the Glenlyon, a 44-ft Antigua sloop. For over 23 years, they sailed all through the US East Coast, the Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Center East.
In 2016, he returned to Worcester and moved to the Briarwood Persevering with Care Retirement Group. He’s famous for his humor and storytelling and as a talented and enthusiastic bridge participant. He typically remarked that he was exceedingly grateful to have had an opportunity to reside such a wealthy and diverse life and for the friendships and neighborhood which he loved at Briarwood in his later years.
Rodney donated his physique to the UMass Chan Medical Faculty. A celebration of his life might be held on Friday, December 15, from 2:00 to three:30 PM on the Loring Auditorium on the Briarwood Persevering with Care Group, 65 Briarwood Circle. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations could also be made to the Briarwood Persevering with Care Group or Bristol Yacht Membership.
